How Elo works

From a word you know
to a word you use.

A definition gets you started. Context and a little practice make it stick. Try the whole idea for yourself.

01

Get to know a word.

A clear meaning, and the difference from words that seem almost the same.

02

Find it in context.

Try a quick question. See when it fits, and when another word feels right.

03

Make it sound like you.

Write your own sentence, then compare it with an example. No pressure to be perfect.

For the meeting. The message.
The story only you can tell.

The right word doesn’t have to be a big word.
It just has to be the one you mean.

Help & support
What is Elo?
Elo is an English vocabulary app being made for iPhone. Each short lesson introduces a useful word, explains the nuance, and gives you a chance to use it. A friendly little companion comes along for the ride.
Is this for native English speakers?
If you’re comfortable reading everyday English and want more ways to express yourself, Elo is for you. It focuses on richer vocabulary and word choice, rather than teaching English from the beginning.
How is it different from a word of the day?
A definition is just the beginning. Elo explores how a word differs from its neighbours, shows it in everyday situations, and makes room for practice and review.
How much time does it take?
Start with one short lesson, then come back when it suits you. You can explore further or review a few words. There’s no need to turn a small habit into homework.
Can I try it here?
Yes. The sample lesson on this page is free, works in your browser, and doesn’t need an account. Your answers stay in this browser session; they don’t sync to the app.
Does the demo grade my writing?
The demo checks a multiple-choice question and lets you compare your own sentence with an example. It doesn’t use AI to judge your sentence, and it doesn’t send your writing to a server.
